The Music Department

The music department comprises of three separate specialist areas. Instrumental Music, Strings and Classroom Music, which includes extra curricular activities.

Classroom Music

The classroom music specialist is Miss Murphy and her classes run on a Monday to Wednesday in the Music Room.

The Prep and Year One program for term 3 is an intorduction to beat, rhythm and dynamics. The children will use a range of non-tuned percussion instruments.

The Year Two and Three program consists on revisting beat, rhythm and pitch and introducing a pitch map which is the beginning of reading music. Students will create their own pitch maps and will experience different ways of making ascending and descending melodic patterns. They will use a range of tuned and non-tuned percussion instruments.

The Year Four to Seven program involves exposing students to simple triple and simple quadriple time, ie. music grouped in three and fours. Students will compose a four bar rhythm piece and then add melody and lyrics.

Instrumental Music

The Instrumental programme has enabled many young people to reach a standard where they can play with confidence in community bands and ensembles.  The students have opportunities to join with students from other schools for intensive learning through workshops and larger ensembles. Mr Deer is on leave for the rest of the term and we have Mr Skyring taking over during this period.

Strings

The strings programme is growing and can now provide tuition for violins, viola, cello and double bass.  As with the other instrumental programme there is opportunity for the students to combine with students from other schools for workshops and camps. Entry to Strings and Instrumental program is based on achievement levels in musical and physical aptitude tests. Mrs Markov is our Strings teacher and her lessons are held every Thursday.

Extra Curricular (Choir)

The choir rehearses on Tuesday and Wednesday second breaks. It is essential that once students have committed themselves to choir that they remain in the choir until the end of the year. This is essential to develop a strong sound and a certain level of discipline. The choir currently has approximately 50 members from years 1 to 7. There are several performances which the choir intends on performing at: the Spring Fair, various morning parades, end of year awards ceremony and the end of year music department concert.

Recorder Ensemble

The recorder ensemble is a new addition to the schools music program. We have a range of experienced and new players. All students must remain committed in order for the group to develop to its full potential. The recorder ensemble rehearses Monday at second break and Wednesday at first break.

Drum Line

The drum line is currently in its experimental phase and are awaiting assistance from various community members to offer advice for performing on Djembe's Djun Djun. The drum line rehearses Monday and Tuesday first break in the Music Room.

Dance/Drama

We are pleased to welcome Miss Heath to the Music Department for this semester. She is from "The Songroom Project" which aims to give all schools a chance to develop their performing arts. Miss Heath has a wealth of experience and knowledge and will be working with 5 classes on a Friday in the Music Room.

Keyboard Classes are run by Kieth Broadhead on Thursdays in the Performance Room at a cost of $10.90 per lesson. For further information please use the following link - Primary Music Institute.

Any questions regarding the Music program or any of its extra curricular activities can be directed to Miss Murphy via appointment.
